Introduction to Photography
This course introduces students to the fundamentals of digital photography. Students will learn how to set up the camera and learn common program modes as well as, learning how to manage parameters such as composition, lighting and exposure. This course wil also discuss how to fine-tune and edit photos using Photoshop.

Objectives

- This course will discuss the download and transferring of photos and organizing photos.
- Students will learn how to fine-tune and edit photos with Adobe Photoshop
- Topical coverage includes camera setup, file formats, sizing, image capture and storage, depth of field and motion, adjustments, colour, contrast, selections, filters, camera controls, lighting, still life, outdoors and indoors photography, compositional techniques, and mounting.
- Compare and contrast the advantages and disadvantages between film and digital cameras.
- Use the terminology related to digital and traditional photography
- Integrate fundamental colour theory in the composition of digital photographs
- Use the principles of lighting in the composition of photographic images
- Apply design principles to the composition of photographs
- Use the correct exposure for specific conditions
- Adjust camera settings based on varying lighting conditions
- Discuss ways to avoid red eye, shadow casting, hot spots, overexposure and underexposure
- Edit and retouch photos using applicable software tools
Prerequisites
- A Digital SLR Camera with connection cables (only 1 available during class)
- A Memory Card and Memory Card Reader if needed
- Basic experience in Adobe Photoshop (Intro level)
